Workshop Overview

The purpose of the Art Workshop is to help children express their creativity by making Art. In doing so, they develop their confidence, increase their empathy and discover how to look at the world from different perspectives. They will also develop and learn techniques in making different forms of Art which can also be a valid tool for the budding artist who wish to pursue the subject seriously during the transition from primary to secondary school. Most importantly it is also meant to be an enjoyable activity and help to promote and support their mental health and wellbeing.

Programme of Work - Age group 6-8 (25 spaces available)

During the eight, hourly sessions, the children will develop and learn new skills in mark making. They will have improved confidence with making a variety of marks using different media. During the sessions they will learn more skills to make more precise and accurate observations. Children will also be given the opportunity to learn about the science of colour and learn to mix primary and secondary colours. They will also understand through experimentation how mixing colours in watercolour and acrylic differ. Following on from this, pupils will also be exposed to the techniques in printing and will be able to use printing inks and rollers to create prints of their own design.

Programme of Work - Age group 9-11 (25 spaces available)

During the eight, hourly sessions, pupils will become more confident with creating a range of mark making using different media and on larger scales as well. They will improve their observation techniques by learning how to 'See and not look.' The children will also develop a deeper understanding of colour mixing using different media and also understand about how pigments react to each other. They will learn how to manipulate media and be able to develop a likeness for a favourite medium. The children will then use their skills to create a painting of their own and demonstrate an appreciation of the entire process beginning with preparing a canvas to skills in applying layers of paint to build an image.

At the end of the workshop all pupils will be given their portfolio of work created during the sessions in addition to their final piece which they will take home.
